addict fights to reclaim life and daughter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Starring Maggie Gyllenhaal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brad William Henke, Danny Trejo, Ryan Simpkins and Bridget Barkan. Directed by Laurie Collyer. (R. 96 minutes. Away Area theaters Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the title character in "Sherrybaby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," an ostensibly reformed heroin addict on parole after 3 years within the slammer. The film opens with her on the bus headed for any halfway house in a seedy section of New Jersey. Sherry straps on headphones and starts moving to a beat only she can hear.
Her instinct to drown out reality can be seen as symptomatic of an inability to cope with the hurdles ahead,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], particularly to regain custody of her young daughter. But this instinct is also her savior and what rescues the movie from being another depressing descent into the netherworld of drug users and pushers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like "Requiem for any Dream" or "Permanent Midnight." Like its hyped-up heroine, "Sherrybaby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," based on a true story, explodes with manic energy that keeps you riveted through parts that might well be hard to watch.
Gyllenhaal's spirited performance invokes Ratso Rizzo if you're able to imagine him inside a halter, miniskirt and platform shoes. Her Sherry is nobody's victim. When somebody accidentally bumps into her in the pub, she removes her headphones and starts yelling obscenities. Ensconced at the halfway house,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she's right into a catfight with another resident.
If something more than defiance is necesary, Sherry uses her sexuality. An employment counselor really wants to ship her on a factory. But Sherry is decided to work with kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for which she received training in prison. Underneath the pretense of trying to find her resume, she sticks her butt practically within the counselor's face then bluntly offers to pleasure him. What she actually says is graphic; the gutsy script by Laurie Collyer, who also directs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doesn't mince words.
Gyllenhaal is heartbreakingly vulnerable in scenes with Ryan Simpkins, who plays Sherry's daughter (Alexis) with a naturalism most child actors are incapable of. In an illustration of Collyer's focus on detail,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both seem like they may be related. When Sherry brags that Alexis is going to be tall and skinny much like her, you can see that in Ryan's frame.
The girl continues to be coping with Sherry's brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bobby (Brad William Henke), and sister-in-law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lynnette (Bridget Barkan). The very first time Sherry comes to their property,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her daughter embraces her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], screaming in delight, "Mommy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mommy." But on the next visit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Alexis is distant and calls her Sherry. A glance of despair passes over Sherry's face followed quickly by anger. She glares at Lynnette,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whom she suspects of sabotage.
The well thought out and largely plausible story hinges on two unknown factors, which are related. How far is Sherry willing to visit get her child back and will she be able to resist the siren call of drugs? The movie's single flaw may be the depiction of her relationship together with her father. The suggestion of something untoward between them is simply too facile a reason for Sherry's downhill spiral.
Gyllenhaal has never been more compelling. Notice her incessant pacing when Sherry is declaring that side of any story. Although totally dominating the film, Gyllenhaal gets some fine support. Barkan makes palpable Lynnette's fascination with their son or daughter she's raised as her own. Henke achieves just the right affable tone for Bobby. His need to be a great guy makes him unwilling to consider sides in a simmering battle between his sister and wife.
Danny Trejo is immediately likable like a former druggie Sherry meets in rehab, who tells her he was a regular customer at a strip club where she worked when she was 16. He recalls exactly what she appears like nude is clear in the tone of Trejo's voice. It's soon apparent he won't have to wait long to see her this way again.
Costume designer Jill Newell deserves special mention for the cheap-looking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flimsy outfits Sherry parades around in. They highlight the single attribute she's been able to rely on. She shows up for her meeting within an ill-fitting pink suit, her interpretation of dressing for success. The jacket hangs loosely on her behalf narrow shoulders while the skirt, characteristically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is too tight.
Inside a realistic touch, Sherry wears exactly the same clothes again and again as she struggles to pull her life together. The film is on her side,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you soon will be, too.
