After you see Score the hockey movie get ready for Score the stage musical
Normally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival is all about images on a giant screen and never concerning the so-called "legitimate theatre."
This season could be different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The movie in TIFF's opening-night spotlight might be on its way to being a lavish stage show - and a crossover hit.
On Thursday night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], several thousand people will attend the world premiere of Score: A Hockey Musical, with screenings at both Roy Thomson Hall and the Elgin Theatre.
It is the 35th movie in history to snare the opening-night gala spotlight at this festival. But unlike another 34 openers in TIFF's history, Score is being scrutinized as material for any future big-budget live show. That could be since this is the very first musical to open TIFF - and it is an authentic.
"Over summer time we now have screened it for a number of producers," says Michael McGowan, who not only wrote and directed the movie but also co-produced it.
McGowan isn't saying who those producers are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], except that some have been in Toronto yet others in Ny. And the reaction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was quite positive, albeit tentative.
Not surprisingly, several people from the office of Mirvish Productions were built with a look at the movie throughout a special preview screening in July.
Perhaps Canada is going to be ready for any How Do You Solve an issue Like Farley? contest.
Farley is the young hero (played onscreen by Noah Reid) who could be the next Sidney Crosby, except they know nothing about hockey, and the parents (Olivia Newton-John and Marc Jordan) are not of the Walter Gretzky mindset. Indeed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're arts-loving New Agers who have given Farley a sheltered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], non-competitive childhood. His playground skills are restricted to home-schooling.
Among other duties, McGowan also wrote the lyrics. While he may not be Cole Porter or Ira Gershwin, he's a knack for putting entertaining words to music.
Obviously prospective theatre producers saw an unfinished film. They'll need to see the finished product before they create a deal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they'll want to know the way it plays with an audience.
One big question won't be answered until late October,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once the movie opens in theatres across Canada. The way audiences respond? You can bet Mongrel Media will pour all its resources into making Score a cross-Canada hit. Actually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mongrel was sensationally successful at marketing 1 week, McGowan's previous movie and making it that rarity: a commercially successful Canadian movie.
"There is really quite a lot of curiosity about it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," McGowan explained yesterday, "but it's too early to say what will happen. If Score makes it to the level, I believe because of the technical requirements,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it would have to be a significant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lavish production."
Note to anybody who loves both hockey and big musicals: Prepare yourself for another opening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another show and a different of opening night for Score.
