Bayonne boys volleyball players know they have big shoes to fill
The scent of fresh paint wafted in the air inside Bayonne High School gymnasium yesterday afternoon during the boys volleyball practice. While the gym undergoes a minor facelift during the preseason, so too are the Bees.
A year removed from a memorable 29-6 campaign that saw coach Pat Longo's team win its first sectional championship in school history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bayonne enters this season without two key cogs of last year's unit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with the same high expectations.
After the graduation of All-State players Konrad Budny (setter) and Kris Kucza (outside hitter),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a crop of inexperienced players will have opportunities to join the fold this season, while already established seniors take on expanded roles.
"We're trying to set an example for the guys that didn't have the opportunity to be on varsity last year but now are on it this year," said senior middle blocker Jordan Elam. "We're going to have to play scrappier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but as far as talent, there's not too big of a fall off."
Last season, the Bees finished No. 6 in the state after falling to Southern Regional in the state semifinals, but not before defeating Livingston for the NJSIAA North 2 sectional title.
Bayonne also claimed its first Hudson County championship since 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], topping Memorial in the Hudson County Tournament final.
Last year's supporting cast, Hojairy Peralta,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Steven Granados, Kraige Tobias and Elam form the senior core of this year's team. The Bees will feature a total of 12 seniors this season.
"I think they're confident," said Longo, the state's reigning boys volleyball Coach of the Year. "But I think they need to get the others on the same page as them. From where they went last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they want to go back there."
That senior foursome won't just be charged with replacing the production of Kucza and Budny on the court,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also their leadership off it -- a task the group is meeting head on.
"Kraige's been instrumental,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," added Longo. "He's been motivated,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he's a talker. He's great on the court,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he communicates and he wants to go back there."
Granados,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a defensive specialist and libero last season, steps into the all-important role as Kucza's replacement at outside hitter, while senior Eric Castellano fills in for Budny at setter. Peralta provides added offensive punch at right side, while Tobias will anchor the defense at libero.
"I know I have big shoes to fill, a lot of weight on my shoulders," said Granados. "I want step up to the plate and be the Kris of last year, but it's hard."
Budny, a First Team All-State selection in 2012,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was fourth in the state in assists a year ago with 669. Kucza averaged just over eight kills a game, garnering Third Team All-State honors.
Mike Rice could have been fired for violating contract,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], independent report findsRutgers payout: Mike Rice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tim Pernetti to collect more than $1M each after departureLautenberg, suffering muscle weakness and fatigue, will not return to Washington next week.相关的主题文章:
