Cav King a court jester
Rochester hadn't hosted an NBA game since 1981. He was simply taking a rest after playing 30 minutes in Tuesday night's 93-67 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv. And the locals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll understand, weren't thrilled. In the ensuing 48 minutes of King-less basketball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one kid held up a sign: "LeBron Ruined My Childhood." Another: "LeBron Let Us Down."
They chanted, intermittently: "We want LeBron!" But they got Sasha Pavlovic starting in his place. They chanted: "We want LeBron!" But as Echols said at courtside: "We got ripped off."
"You buy the jerseys. You buy the tickets. You get the kids excited ." Echols said, shaking his head.
If you can't muster a little sympathy for the folks across the lake,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], understand that James is coming to Air Canada Centre on Sunday. If recent history is a guide he won't be playing. The Cavaliers play Saturday against Atlanta in Columbus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ohio. And the team has been candid about its intention to rest James in the second game of pre-season back-to-backs.
(Although,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mike Brown, the Cleveland coach said last night "the chances are" that James will see some action on Sunday.)
Fair enough. Pre-season games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as Toronto's Chris Bosh has said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "don't mean anything." You can understand a franchise's urge to protect a star player when the games don't count.
But it's a dishonest sell. It's not as though NBA teams discount their pre-season seats. Many season ticket packages are sold in 45-game bulk with no distinction made between the games that count and the ones that don't. Last night's seats cost as much as $150. The cheapest was $25. More than 9,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 tickets were sold.
For weeks the local media ran ads touting James's impending arrival. And he showed up, only to act like a spoiled diva.
The crowd chanted: "We want LeBron!" And James all but mocked them. Once, James actually got up from the bench as if to enter the game. When he immediately turned around and sat down, he wore a devilish grin. There were boos. columnist has coined him.
"I've got to focus on my health right now," said James before the game. "I'm not sorry for the fans here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I've got to do what's best for my team and my teammates."
That last sentence didn't come out as it was intended,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. James clearly misspoke when he said he was "not sorry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]." He meant he was "sorry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]." But he sure didn't act like it.
Beseeched by seekers of autographs and snapshots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a certain kind of player would have spent at least a few minutes with a Sharpie and a smile last night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], giving at least a few of the fans what they wanted. But you'll be hard-pressed to find the report of James shaking one hand or sign one autograph. He rarely does.
Echols was looking on the bright side before last night's game: "At least I'll get a good look at Chris Bosh." And a reporter didn't have the heart to tell the man that Bosh, was also sitting out. Bosh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at least, could cite a specific body part that was troubling him: His heel. Bosh, unlike James, signed a few autographs coming and going from the court. But if there was consolation, it was only in the catharsis of the boos that rained on the court when the buzzer sounded and James exited. They'd come to be awed by King James. They'd been left feeling awful by a joker.
