Let keep the Magic a secret
May 31, 2009 hard for me to congratulate somebody after you just lose to them. LeBron James in response to walking immediately off the court after a 103-90 season ending loss to the Orlando Magic in Game 6 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals.
May 13, 2010 LeBron James loses Game 6 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals to the Boston Celtics. The pessimist in me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, just thinks that he had no respect for the Magic, a team that frustrated him more-so with their style of play. If you watched both series, you could clearly see that Orlando won last year because they were the grittier/tougher team to take anything away from Boston this year, but two of their wins came at the hands of the Cavs going cold at the absolute worst times, outright quitting, or Cleveland Coach Mike Brown doing his best Mike Dunleavy impression. I just don know which scenario is more plausible. What I do know is that yet another year will go by of LeBron sitting at the kids table with Ewing, Barkley, and Malone (and yet another year will go by without the David Stern/Nike wet dream occurring).
Was this a case of LeBron learning his lesson or a case of King James disrespecting
Orlando? (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)
The funny thing is, throughout the entire situation, the topic is STILL James. No matter in victory or in loss, the aura of the King still looms over the NBA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nullifying any actual basketball analysis for upcoming games. And in all reality, that not a bad thing. Look, I a passionate fan of basketball to a point of obsession I will always be concerned at the state of the league as well as the state of my team. In the mid-late 90s, the Association was booming. During the mid 2000s, it was hobbling on one leg. Now in an awkward position. Yes, we have the solidified superstars like Kobe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Garnett, and Duncan, with a slew of young guns in Howard, Paul, and Durant. But sitting atop of the marketing giant that is the NBA is, of course, LeBron. Much like Bird/Magic in the '80s and Jordan in the 90s, what he does dictates how the entire league will be perceived by mainstream America. Right now, he helping to shoulder the load while playing in a Midwestern market. In just over a month, he has the opportunity to become the emperor and sole supporter of an entire conglomerate. While it would inevitably destroy the entire city of Cleveland (and I don just mean sports-wise, I mean the entire city local economy and job market will be shattered to a point worse that Detroit I joking? You think sports don matter that much in society? Talk to me in a year after James leaves and try to convince me that Cleveland is a marketable city) it would be a blessing for all of the NBA.
By putting the biggest player in the biggest market (or at least a top five market if he winds up in Chicago, LA, or New Jersey/Brooklyn), you establishing a reason for non-fans to watch; not just for LeBron games, but for the entire sport of basketball. While yes, he does become the main attraction, he would allow the casual fan to take notice to other superstars and other powerful teams. Think about how Jordan got the average person to pay attention to the likes of Reggie Miller, David Robinson, and Kevin Johnson. Although these players were superstars and could carry their own weight, you only knew of their ability if you followed the game. Middle aged moms who were shelling out $40 for a kids jersey had no idea who they were, other than saw that guy once play Jordan. get it, I get it in a completely different age, prevalent with online media and more mobile communication you right, it a lot easier for people to know what else is exciting in the Association. But it still dips into the older and have lots of disposable income. What are my kids paying attention to? Wait, I seen that guy in those commercials. Whoa, he did what? Wait, who that guy? This is fun! I think I going to buy a shirt so my kids think I cool! market. And trust me, this market exists in MASSIVE numbers. (True story, since I started writing articles and chatting with random people about basketball, be it in airplanes, bars, etc.,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], half of the older crowd who don really follow sports (aka, the people with disposable income) had no idea that Oklahoma City had a team. HALF! And all of them asked what happened to the Super Sonics? You telling me this market can be tapped for millions of dollars? You going to convince me that a transcendent, once in a generation superstar won be able to convince these people to at least casually watch a game, if only for the sole purpose to fit in with a crowd?)
Although the Knicks, Nets, and Clippers have embarrassed the league over the last few years with terrible play and financial moves set only for this summer (well, the Clippers have really embarrassed the league for a litany of reasons for the last few decades I do appreciate where the NBA is headed. Superstar upon superstar is available to be wooed into a completely different market, with nearly half of the league being shaken up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], roster wise. I truly believe this will do nothing but benefit the league,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hopefully bringing it to a mid-90s level of excitement where everyone in every city, regardless of how well they followed sports, could at least join together in the spirit of basketball.
Meanwhile, on the other coast, the Los Angeles Lakers have a hellacious task in handling the Phoenix Suns. As the last ditch effort of the Nash-era Run n Gun offense, this squad is terrifying. With Amar Jason Richardson, Channing Frye,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a healthy Grant Hill (I WAY too bitter about this to go off on a side note me, you better off that way) surrounding the Canadian superstar, Kobe and Co. are going to have to rely on their size advantage if they ever going to think about getting back to the finals. (Side note: did you SEE Steve Nash face during Game 4 against the Spurs? I mean, the dude wasn that attractive of a person to begin with, but couple that with a broken nose AND a swollen/stitched eye? And he somehow was still able to drain 3s and rack nearly double digit assists man is ridiculously good, in case you haven noticed. Although, it does make me wonder what would happened had the Mavericks kept him a few years ago. You telling me a nucleus of Dirk, Josh Howard, and Steve Nash wouldn have dominated these last few years? Instead, they spent the money on Eric Dampier (the biggest thief in all of sports) and got rid of Josh they deserved to be cheated out of a 2006 title Suns are the more particular focus, however. They finally broke free of the San Antonio slump. They finally got past their hated rivals who have been shutting them out of the playoffs year after year. This has to be a bigger story than it currently is. Jordan didn win his championships until he got past the Pistons. Reggie Miller couldn rest until he finally beat the Knicks. LeBron didn hoist up the trophies until he beat hasn happened yet. But getting that massive monkey off of your shoulders allows you to have a lot more fun and yields tremendous success (see: Elway, John; 1997 season vs. 1998 season). much like they did to the Spurs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but expect this to go a full 7 games. Do the Lakers try to run with the Suns or do they rely on the tandem of Gasol and Odom? Does J-Rich step up his game against Kobe or does the Black Mamba humiliate the streakiest shooter in the league? For the sake of my entertainment (as well as for David Stern sanity) let hope this isn another boring sweep that murders the league.
So, why did I spend more than half of my article talking about anything BUT the Orlando Magic? Well that what the rest of the sports world is doing? Isn the rest of America focused on how well Kobe can carry his team, whether Boston old legs beat the Cavs, and where LeBron is headed this summer? Normally, I would be offended would be ranting and raving that Orlando gets no respect and that David Stern hates us the weird thing is love that no one saying a dang thing about the Magic. And to everyone reading this article keep it that way! Let make sure O-Town stays hush-hush about just how great our NBA franchise is.
Here the deal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I LOVE not being well known and in the limelight. When everyone talks about you, it only serves as a vessel for disappointment (see: James, LeBron or Dan vs. Dave). When everyone pays attention to you, they nitpick, they come up with excuses, they find faults. No one actually gives you the credit you deserve more-so than they give you grief for not being perfect. This team has proven time and time again that, not only can it hang with the big boys, it can beat them handily. But while, yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Charlotte and Atlanta haven been the greatest of teams to face, they handled these so called caliber teams worse than the Kobra Kai handled Daniel-San for 95% of the Karate Kid. These games haven been attractive, or frankly interesting to watch at all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that shouldn take away from just how good this team is. Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you just know there a little bit of you don respect us? You don talk about us? Watch as we murder you. motivation in that Amway locker room.
It's surprising just how many people forgot the Magic dominated
their way into the finals last year. (AP Photo/Phelam M,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Ebenhack)
I was in the Los Angeles area for the past couple of weeks and noticed just how little coverage there was for the Black and Blue. Although the Lakers were completing a sweep of the Utah Jazz (a first for the Salt Lake franchise) not one word was mentioned of Orlando demolishing expose of the Hawks, if the Magic were a threat to win it all, or even if the possibility of an NBA Finals rematch would occur. Keep neglecting just how powerful the Magic are. Keep forgetting that this team has set scoring records with their 3 point shooting, yet has one of the most efficient defenses in the league (according to my friends at STATS, LLC). Keep ignoring that, over the last 30 games, Orlando has outscored their opponents more than the Lakers, Celtics, and Suns have ALL YEAR! Quite frankly, I love keeping our beast of a team our little secret. When everyone wondering just how Orlando did it, how they were able to destroy teams around the league and hoist the Larry O trophy the rest of the US is taken by surprise when that tiny Mickey Mouse team has won it all say we didn warn you. You spent all year criticizing the trade of Courtney Lee, the signing of Vince,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the release of Hedo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the lack of offensive moves of Dwight, the health of Jameer used the entire season to laugh at us. Fortunately, it be the City Beautiful who will have the last laugh.相关的主题文章:
