Huge strides for St
They protested and complained about the workouts -- Sneakers and buckets? What the heck is going on? -- and then they produced one of the best seasons in years for a program that usually gets overlooked among the state wide swath of powerful non-public swim programs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
St. Peter Prep in Jersey City rolled up a 14-3 dual meet record and qualified for the Non-Public A state tournament,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
It was enough for St. Peter fourth-year coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ryan Heffernan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to start believing things are on the way up for the unheralded Jersey City program in Hudson County.
``It difficult being in the county we in because it doesn have the caliber of swimming we going after, Heffernan said. ``In many ways it can be an uphill thing. When I became coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I thought the only way we were going to grow as a program was to go outside the county.
Once he liked what he saw in terms of commitment and effort within the program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Heffernan, assisted by Frank Giordano and Brian Jones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], started to bolster the schedule with some out-of-county challenges -- with the full understanding that his team would take some lumps along the way.
This season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], St. Peter defeated Bergen Catholic and Red Bank Catholic, lost to Christian Brothers and Don Bosco, and beat Delbarton and eventual North Jersey, Section 1, Public A champion Ridgewood.
In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Heffernan was so pleased with how his team performed in the regular season that he felt the time was finally right to bring his swimmers into their first taste of the limelight.
On Jan. 30,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], St. Peter competed in the National Catholic Championships at Villanova. The trip was a reward and a challenge all at the same time for the Marauders.
Junior Will Brown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the team best swimmer and one of its co-captains, made the biggest headlines of all for the Jersey City team, placing sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.29 and fourth in the 200 free in 1:43.82. He also anchored the freestyle relays into a pair of championship finals. The 400 free relay placed seventh (3:22.63) and the 200 free relay was eighth (1:32.41). The relays were handled by juniors Chris Cannizzaro and Mike Bajuz,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sophomore Andrew William and Brown.
St,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Peter knows it has a ways to go to reach the heights to which it aspires. It was knocked out of the NJSIAA Non-Public A tournament in the first round by St. Joseph of Metuchen (103-67),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The season isn over for St. Peter
Brown has also qualified for the 100 butterfly (54.60), as has teammate Cannizzaro (54.89),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Andrew William will compete in the 500 free (5:00.11). St. Peter will also compete in the 200 free relay (1:32.4Cool) and the 400 free relay (3:22.63).
