Indian Wedding
GEORGE NEGUS: Hi. Welcome. Well, last week we travelled, really travelled, literally in the cradle to the grave - in the mystery of birth smoking in the Kimberley to how Ghanaian-Australians find death something to celebrate. Well, tonight, 'Aussie Rituals Part 2'. The scene - suburban Sydney. The occasion - a marriage. The reporter - David Adams. This really is their wedding day. However they are not married yet. That does not happen for another four days. (DIPALI'S PARENTS PERFORM RITUAL DANCE). This really is Dipali's mum and dad. They are Gujarati-Australian Hindus. (ANDREW'S FATHER LOOKS ON). This is Andrew's dad - for the moment, just happy to look on. (ANDREW'S MUM PERFORMS RITUAL DANCE). Which is Andrew's mum. They're Malay-Australian Catholics.
DIPALI SHUKLA: If you notice Andrew's family, it's similar to whole of the world is within their loved ones. They have Italians,http://peutereyoutletitaliaonline.olimx.com/, Chinese, Indians, cheap roger vivier sale, Malaysians - everything - so they're quite accustomed to it. However i guess from my side,Discount Nike Soccer Shoes, or my family's perspective, it had been a bit hard to sort of digest the truth that I had been getting married to someone that wasn't an Indian.
DAVID ADAMS: Two families from two different cultures who've come together for a different Australian wedding. This traditional dancing is only the first celebration in a week-long event. The next day, the entire process of preparing Dipali for the wedding ceremony begins at her parents' place. This is henna, and it is application is definitely an artform all its own.
DIPALI SHUKLA: It starts off with getting henna on my small hands. Which normally happens a few days before the wedding, because of the colour. You don't want the colour to sort of fade away. The richer the color, the greater it's. So on on that day we will have the priest arrived at our house and he's going to do a few prayers. It'll start with my mum and dad relaxing in prayers praying for peace in the house. As well as on on that day, the bride actually gets this turmeric powder along with a sandalwood paste put on her face by all of the girls there. And that's basically kind of symbolic of getting the bride all pretty, getting her. It's like a facial sort of anything - getting her all nice and beautiful for the next day.
ANDREW PHILLIPS: That, might that.
DAVID ADAMS: It's the morning of the wedding, roger vivier online, along with a nervous Andrew is being kept company by his groomsmen. And he's running late.
ANDREW PHILLIPS: Father-in-law-to-be's just rung as much as make certain we get there at 10:30 on the dot. Odds and ends to be.
DAVID ADAMS: A lot of this, duvetica online store, you don't know what'll happen?
ANDREW PHILLIPS: We're winging it. We've got a general idea how to proceed, but we will wing it. There's a lot of odds and ends - their culture's full of heritage. Basically knew everything, roger vivier heels, I'd stress myself out to remember what to do. Dipali and I were talking over the phone. It will likely be an extremely unique wedding. Tonight's our wedding night as well as the night I'm not supposed to begin to see the bride. From an Indian perspective, tonight's her mehndi night where the girl officially leaves her parents' home and she can't go back home. By our tradition, we don't begin to see the bride the night time before so she's in a sort of a no-woman's land. Alright. Here goes the outfit. Normally I would have someone helping me, but my two groomsmen happen to be really helpful and disappeared.
DAVID ADAMS: Let me know what to do. I'll help.
ANDREW PHILLIPS: No.
DAVID ADAMS: Are you sure this fits,Duvetica piumini?
ANDREW PHILLIPS: I've used it on once they brought it back from India because we couldn't have boo-boos. It fitted well then. I've probably lost weight since. But,http://duveticamen.blogspot.com/.
DAVID ADAMS: It's fantastic.
ANDREW PHILLIPS: Oh, yeah. Very regal, is it not?
DAVID ADAMS: You look like a prince.
DIPALI SHUKLA: We have the Hindu ceremony the next day. Um,Nike Soccer Shoes, again, that's quite dissimilar to your normal Christian ceremony. (FOOT-BATHING CEREMONY IS CONDUCTED WHILE MAN CHANTS MANTRA).
DIPALI SHUKLA: And that i don't actually come till probably half an hour or an hour till after all those are done and when I come there, that's basically called the hasta-melap which has to happen at a certain time.
DAVID ADAMS: A veil has been lifted so Andrew can't see Dipali enter.
DIPALI SHUKLA: We're gonna possess the hasta-melap, that is basically giving the hand towards the groom at 12. So this is when the actual wedding is happening. (VEIL Before ANDREW IS LOWERED).
DIPALI SHUKLA: Next, you've, like, in which you bypass the fireplace. (MAN CHANTS MANTRA WHILE ANDREW AND DIPALI CIRCLE FIRE).
DIPALI SHUKLA: And what that's is actually like your wedding vows, so,Peuterey Outlet Italia Online, you, every time you go round the fire, you are making a promise to each other. And they're much the same promises that you'd make at a Catholic ceremony.
DAVID ADAMS: And today they're married. So that as couple, they break each other's wedding fast. Well, what's the significance of this? There is lots you can say concerning the worth of multiculturalism - that having these kinds of events is actually ideal for us all, these cultures still exist around australia. I believe it's easier than that. It comes down to a celebration. If you were going to possess a wedding, what an incredible method of doing it. It's time for Dipali and Andrew to depart. The issue is, someone's stolen his shoes. It is a tradition. And today he or she must pay a cost to have them returned or Dipali's family won't let her leave.
MAN: $5,000!
ANDREW PHILLIPS: You're mad! (MAN YELLS ANSWER, LAUGHING). Try again. Repeat the process.
DAVID ADAMS: The problem is, they're not going to come cheap. But even today it's not all over. There's one more ceremony in the future - this time a Catholic service. And due to that, it will be another whole day before Andrew and Dipali are husband and wife in both their cultures.
GEORGE NEGUS: Well, if they don't live happily ever after following a four-day wedding, two weddings, in fact, they've certainly gone to a heck of a lot of trouble for free. Like that word 'rich' to explain that kind of tradition. We'd have to be better for it, even when they are not our traditions. Only a thought.
