It Sucks to be Gray Powell Right Now
There's almost no one in the universe I feel sorrier for at the moment than Gray Powell, the young software engineer who has become a meme overnight for being the one responsible for losing Apple's precious iPhone 4G prototype in a bar.

Apple completely blew it on this one, because the parties that found the prototype phone in the Redwood City bar actually tried to return it to Apple, and Apple denied knowledge or ownership.
What did Apple do instead? They remotely deactivated the phone, which was apparently running Apple OS 4.0 software before they pulled the switch on it. Our Gray Powell, who likes German beer, and had a cushy job as a software engineer at Apple. I like to think Gray is a pretty nice guy, who just happened to have made a really costly mistake in an unguarded moment. He's probably a lot of fun to kick back with and have a few beers. He might not be the best choice to guard a super-secret electronic prototype.
But the biggest mistake was Apple's, in not taking the phone back when it was first offered to them. In that process, Gray Powell is paying a very big price.
And I'm not sure he deserves it.

Good synopsis of the whole affair. As SheilaTGTG55 said, I didn't realize that Apple didn't take the phone back at first. I have to disagree with you on one point though: I wouldn't call working at Apple a cushy job. Although they pay pretty well and their stock has been going up lately, their employees are basically working all the time in a high-pressure, and often adversarial environment. I would think they'd have an absolute rule that prototypes like this do not leave campus, ever. You keep them under lock and key at Appleville. You don't take them home, much less to bars. Silkstone, it's my understanding that every day there are people in several different companies testing out new electronic prototypes outside of their office. This is apparently standard procedure when new phones and other devices are being prepared to be brought to market. There are a number of reasons why they leave the campus to be tested in other areas.
The outing of Gray Powell as employee who left behind the prototype is a complicated story. It seems Apple still had him (at least a couple of days ago, anyway) in their employ,[url=http://duveticadeutschlandshop.halod.com/][b]Duvetica Jacken[/b][/url], and Gizmodo/Gawker were the ones who chose to disclose his name. I wonder if he'll take action against them for doing that, or whether his job is secure. Since employees at Foxconn are leaping out of tall buildings, one has to wonder what kind of pressure is brought to bear on young software engineers with Apple who lose prototypes.
