LeBron James feels the hate in Cleveland
CLEVELAND-In the hours before LeBron James prepared to face the pent-up rage of this hardbitten city,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], James's coach theorized that no NBA player was better equipped for the onslaught.
The 25-year-old James,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Erik Spoelstra's reasoning went, has sweated under the sporting world's spotlight since he was a Sports Illustrated cover boy at 17. So the prospect of 20,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],562 fans expelling their disgust in the wake of James's garish free-agent exit for Miami?
But maybe nobody, not even James, had ever been immersed in precisely this environment. The opening moments of James's return to Northeast Ohio amounted to a deafening display of disdain, the likes of which probably hadn't been heard in NBA circles since a villain named Vince Carter arrived at the Air Canada Centre as a New Jersey Net in 2005.
You're familiar with standing ovations? Again and again on Thursday Cleveland's fans showered James,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who grew up in nearby Akron and spent seven seasons starring for the Cavaliers, in standing condemnations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rising to boo him for his crimes against their civic pride.
Despite pre-game fears about security, the rabble was as non-violent as it was noisy. All they did was hold up handmade signs - "You Were King. Now You're Just A Court Jester" - and hand out sheets bearing the words of coordinated chants ("Ak-ron Hates You!" was an early-game favourite). When they weren't defacing their old Cavaliers No. 23 jerseys with duct tape and magic markers - replacing "James" with the likes of "LeFraud" - they wore an amazing selection of professionally printed anti-LeBron merchandise. "Born Here. Raised Here. Played Here. Hated Here," was the message on one popular black sweatshirt. Of that, Thursday's game left no doubt.
Still, in the end it was Spoelstra,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much to the chagrin of the locals, who turned out to be prophetic.
In the same manner Carter, seemingly fuelled by boos, so often torched Toronto, James, who averaged 27 points a game at Quicken Loans Arena as the beloved local hero, reeled off 38 points in his enemy debut. Much to the chagrin of the assemblage, the Heat won in an anticlimactic blowout, 118-90.
"It's nothing personal," said James after it was over. "It's a basketball game."
Miami's hoopsters have slogged through early-season travails integrating James with fellow all-stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. But when you consider that the guy who took James's former place in Cleveland's starting lineup on Thursday was an ex-Raptor named Joey Graham,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you get a decent idea of why those travails weren't readily evident here.
Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the game won't be remembered for the score. It'll be remembered as the night Cleveland's hard-luck sports fans tried to settle a score, however fleetingly. And perhaps true to the tradition of a city that hasn't celebrated a major championship since the Browns won the 1964 NFL title,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a valiant attempt came without a storybook finish.
"This," said one courtside-sitting fan before the game began, "is our season."
Their "season" was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], until the game started, something to behold. When Charles Barkley, the TNT commentator who has been critical of James's free-agent flight, appeared on the floor before tipoff, he was roundly cheered. And when James first emerged from the locker-room, he and the Heat were greeted by a foundation-shaking chant: "A--hole!"
James seemed bothered by none of it and smiled through most of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. And he dominated as he so often has,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"So many things went through my mind (during the game)," said James. "I have nothing bad to say about these fans at all. Seven great years . . . I understand their frustration. I was frustrated also because we didn't accomplish what we wanted to accomplish at the end of the day."
Indeed, it had been James, who led the Cavs to an NBA final a few years back, who had vowed to bring his home region its long-awaited championship. "I'm not going to stop 'til we get it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he had said, more than once.
But then came that day in July when James, in a narcissistic TV special,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], announced his intention to take his talents to South Beach, never mind that stuff about never stopping 'til the ring ceremony,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never mind common courtesy. So in a city in which his image once commanded the 10-storey broadside of a downtown paint factory - complete with a slogan, "We Are All Witnesses" - he is now reviled.
By the end of Thursday, it was as though the game had morphed from an expression of hate to a public wake for a dream gone dead. With the Cavs falling hopelessly behind, the flow of disdain changed to an outpouring of palpable pain.
A smattering of fans broke into a chant: "Wit-nessed! No-thing!" There's not much left to see here now, at least not for a while, and there might not be an NBA city better equipped for the onslaught.相关的主题文章:
