Schmotter enjoys challenge of NCAA post
DANBURY -- President starred in his own "Hoosiers" tale growing up in Crooksville,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ohio, a modestly populated village that subsisted on family-owned potteries and Crooksville Ceramics basketball.
Too small for the Big Ten but plenty talented for the next level, his hoops legend -- as it remains to folks back home -- was nurtured locally at Division III in New Concord, Ohio.
"I joke that I played back when they shot underhanded free throws and had peach baskets (for rims),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Schmotter told The News-Times from inside the on Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], over the sound of squeaking sneakers on hardwood during men's basketball practice.
"Back in the town I grew up in -- a Midwestern, basketball-crazy place -- people still go, `You used to have that great jump shot from the corner.' I say, `I'm 60 years old now. That was a long time ago.'"
Schmotter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 64, has, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], moved on from his favorite corner to more meaningful accomplishments. But the foundation laid during his time on the court -- "it teaches you about preparation and it teaches you how to deal with setbacks" -- has guided Schmotter through a decades-long devotion to academia and countless years in leadership roles in business education.
Now, he has the unique chance to serve the community of student-athletes.
"It's really an honor," he said. "I think athletics is an important part of the undergraduate experience. It's more work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's more things to do, but it's something I feel very strongly about. My life was changed in a very positive way by participating (in college sports). I'm also honored because public institutions like (WestConn) are a minority in Division III. Only 18 percent of the 444 schools in Division III are public. Having the chance to represent that point of view is important."
Schmotter said that chief among Division III's list of ongoing projects is the identity initiative, with its purpose of "identifying what Division III is and the particular role it plays in intercollegiate athletics."
He added, "It's the largest division in terms of schools, but often the particular characteristics of what our student-athletes do is overlooked. It's thought, `Well, it's for people who aren't good enough for Divisions I or II,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they don't receive financial aid.' But there's really a philosophical basis behind it."
Schmotter brought up the NCAA commercial, aired during the NCAA basketball tournament,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that says most Division I athletes will "go pro" in something other than their sport -- which doesn't quite apply to Division III student-athletes.
Those student-athletes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Schmotter said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are resigned to that fact from the get-go. Their pure love of the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as their willingness to get involved in other on-campus ventures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], offer the chance for refreshing headlines.
"Division III student-athletes are very much treated like all the other students,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Schmotter said. "They participate in a range of activities. They do student government, they study abroad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], theater, music. Division III really is about men and women who love the game; they don't have a financial relationship with it. We think that message is especially important now. With all the challenges of the NCAA -- the horror stories and the negative narrative that exist -- we want to do our best to tell that story."
Schmotter's position also grants him membership to the 15-member , which gives him the opportunity to stay current on widespread NCAA matters. He said it's especially important that university presidents take that approach, something he will continue to push as Division III chairman.
Other agenda items include a continued partnership with the , adjustments to recruiting policy and a renewed approach to drug and alcohol testing and awareness.
Above all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though, Schmotter said he is committed to shifting perceptions about student-athletes across all NCAA divisions. Sports helped make him who he is today and he relishes the chance to give back.
