Seven Warning Signs of Addiction in Five Minutes or Less,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
What comes to your mind when you hear the word "alcoholic" or "addict?" Do you think of simply a social outcast; or do you think of anyone who may be affected by addiction, from teens to college students; from homemakers to licensed professionals from every walk of life?
Well, if you can envision a chronic brain disease that can affect anyone at any time - you can understand what addiction looks like today. It is a disease of epidemic proportions that kills more people than all other chronic illnesses put together.
We all know that addiction is a serious disease, that it can strike anyone, and that it destroys lives and families. But how do you know if you or someone you care about has crossed the line and needs help? When do change from just being a user of a substance to being an addict? To answer this we asked Dr. Scott Davis, the Inpatient Medical Director at the Betty Ford Center. He provided seven important warning signs that suggest a problem with addiction may exist, and I'd like to share them with you now.
1)INCREASED TOLERANCE- By "tolerance" we mean that as one becomes accustomed to drinking more or using more drug over a longer period of time, the body quickly adapts to it. It takes more and more just to reach the same high. As tolerance to a drug grows, problems also develop in a person's relationships with family, friends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in their workplace.
2)WITHDRAWAL- A person's body may become so dependent on alcohol or other drugs such as tranquilizers or painkillers that it actually needs them to function normally. In these cases, when the drinking or drug use is stopped,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], physical signs of withdrawal can be seen. A person can look tired or sleepy- as in withdrawal from cocaine or amphetamine. Withdrawal from alcohol, tranquilizers, and opiates can cause very dramatic signs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as tremors of the hands and tongue, sweating, pinpoint-sized pupils, and excessive yawning. Stomach problems such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping can be part of this picture.
3)Drinking or drug use in much larger amounts or for longer time than intended. Here as a person becomes more tolerant to the effects of alcohol or a drug, they lose that ability to set limits on how much they will use.
4)A persisting desire to cut down or control the use of the drug, usually unsuccessfully. This is akin to an alcoholic or addict pushing down on the brakes of a runaway problem. They just can't stop.
5)Much more time is spent getting the drug,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], using it, or recovering from the effects of it. It comes to consume a person's life.
6)Activities that the alcoholic or addict once enjoyed are given up and replaced by their drinking or drug use. We know that continued drinking and drug use can cause many very serious physical and psychological problems; even heart attacks, strokes, depression and suicide.
7)The drinking or drug use continues despite these serious physical and psychological problems developing because of it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A person's health literally takes a backseat to their runaway addiction.
Addiction is a very serious, and often deadly, chronic disease. But with early recognition, as we have discussed, very effective treatment is available today. Depending on the type and severity of the addiction, treatment options can range from individual therapy, to intensive outpatient programs; even to residential inpatient treatment facilities designed to treat more advanced cases. If you see any of these seven warning signs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], please seek help immediately from your primary doctor or an addiction specialist experienced in diagnosing and treating alcoholism and other addictive disorders.

Well done. And suggests a huge unmet meed in our country to be dealt with. I thought I was pretty good at breaking addictions. But then I realized I was still starting new ones at about an equal or greater rate then I was breaking them. Was too tolerant of others with the problem so entered into business with an alcoholic in denial; had me fooled for too long. His wife was even more fierce in her denial of her husbands problem. Learned the hard way he played a role of loyalty me and the company I had him managing while really having a loyalty to his habit and to those he hired,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including as our accountant and two sales people, all addicts in denial. I didn't know how to solve the problem but going broke seemed to take it from my hands as there was nothing to pay them with. 2 years later I learned by a knock on the door that he and the accountant had divided the tax reserves but told me that went to IRS.
I owed that plus 100% penalty plus interest.
Hi David et al. As an addictions counselor and a 35 years clean and sober person, I know this information to be valid and in need of dissemination. It applies mostly to the later stages. The initial stages reveal themselves in the person's mental attitude towards their substance use. "I can control it." What is being controlled if not a problem? Alibis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], excuses, blaming, justifications, rationalizations. "It was Christmas. "He deserved it." "I can afford it." Looking at where the problem isn't. "I didn't drink for a month." (But when you did. whatever disaster. Variations of "You'd drink too if you had a wife like mine!" Any version of, "I can't be an alcoholic/addict because. " or "I (only) do it because. " Once you get this particular flavor you can spot it a mile away. Best, Brian,
This is an excellent post I agree to all the points mentioned above. But this addiction is not just limited to harming oneself but the sufferers are also the people related to them. As mentioned by you that they loose the desire to control, this can be resolved if the person somewhere make an effort to practice meditation which is the best way to relax yourself, get rid of stress at the same time creates a positive vibration at the same time builds an attitude of self control self satisfaction.
David, this is a great informational video. As we all know information doesn't make a difference by itself. I would have preferred that you would have taken a more authentic approach and share some of your own addictions and how you have overcome them! Also, the biggest addiction of all "wanting to be right" needs to be mentioned. All addictions are fear based which is the underlying core issue that needs to be transformed. Treating the symptoms we have done for many decades, how well is it working?
Keyboard monitoring software is reliable solution to restore reports of recorded data in text file formats for future references. Keystroke recorder program records all internet online/offline activities like visited website URL, emails, chat conversation with account login ID information. Keyboard recorder software application is fully functional to work under all versions of Windows operating system. Keystroke monitoring program provides an efficient tool for any network administrator, office manager and other PC owners due to their hidden background running capability. Download keylogger application easily observe entire typed information like user name, password and other important with their accurate date and time details.
The information is all true but straight out of the manual of disorders that clinicians use to diagnose someone.
For those with addictions it is dry and treats them as statistics. It does nothing to relate the emotional trauma that leads them to develop or maintain an addiction. No one can identify with them, feel compassion or help them overcome it.
It is a huge myth that nicotine is addictive and one that stops people from giving up smoking. Two thirds of people who want to stop smoking believe that they cannot because they are addicted to nicotine. In fact it is no more addictive than sugar or chocolate. No one has ever gone in to "rehab" to give up smoking. There are no rehabilitation clinics or hospitals for smoking addicts despite the fact smoking is the single biggest preventable cause of death. It is possible to stop smoking instantly without any ill effects. Hypnotherapy can help this process,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is not necessary - it just makes it easier.
