Buying shoes for 1 year old,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Hello,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my daughter is almost 1 and it's looking like she will be taking her first steps very soon. I have some questions about shoes she will need.
1) I read that feet should be measured and new shoes should be bought every 2-4 months. If this olia right,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that's a lot if money. Striderite shoes are $40 a pair!
3) Are shoes necessary or is it really ok to let her walk around barefoot? There are socks that offer traction to avoid slipping,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are there other reasons shoes are needed?
I appreciate any input/advice Smile
Here's my take (but I really know nothing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm just a FTM!!). First of all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], avoid laces at all costs LOL! We did buy striderite shoes for our DS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because he became a walking fool about 1.5 months ago. We bought them slightly big (so shoot me) so they would hopefully last for a little longer. I do think there is nothing wrong with barefeet and/or socks with grips for around the house. But there is something about being out in public that I just think it is not sanitary or healthy or safe for them not to have a good pair of proper walking shoes. So personally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we will be shelling out for decent walking shoes. I'm hoping to keep it to 2 to 3 times per year.
I didn't buy DD any shoes until 18 months old and she was walking before 1 year old,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Shoes make it harder for kids to learn balance when they are first starting to walk and can make them walk on their feet wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We never let her walk around in public until about 18 months so there was no need to wear shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The only time she wears them now is if we are going somewhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. If you want to let her walk around in public I would go with the traction socks until she is well established with walking/running,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
DD is 14 months old and can walk holding/pushing stuff but not on her own. She walks around the house barefoot or in socks but I put shoes on her to go outside. Sometimes I let her walk around the grass barefoot. I've read that it's best for LO's to learn to walk barefoot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then in soft soled shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then hard soled shoes. I bought DD shoes last month because it's getting cold and she loves to play outside so I have to keep her feet warm. The only solid shoes I could find were hard soled but DD doesn't have a problem with them. I got them for $12 at walmart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I just made sure that they fit her feet well. Her shoes have laces and at first she was fascinated with untying her shoes but she leaves them alone now because she knows that we're going outside!
I think stride rite has good shoes but more for older kids. I don't buy into the whole soft rubber soles they have for new walkers. My siblings and I wore hardsole shoes when we were babies and did fine. She does not wear shoes inside and I do not feel that hard sole shoes harm her in any way. Also I will not spend $40+ on shoes that she will only wear for maybe 3-4 months. I get her shoes at Payless. I wanted to get her the next size up since her feet seem to grow over night without warning so I got her 2 pair for less then $20. Once she starts school and will be wearing shoes all day I will buy her a nicer pair of everyday walking shoes and be willing to pay more then.
