Iranian film delivers a wallop
COLOR OF PARADISE: Starring and . Written and directed by . (PG. In Farsi with English subtitles. 104 minutes. At Bay Area theaters.) The blossoming of Iranian films this spring refuses to let up. "Two Women" has just closed here, but the San Francisco International Film Festival is about to honor Iranian director , and today the latest film by Majid Majidi opens.
It is called "The Color of Paradise," and it is a wonder.
Moviegoers last year who were perspicacious enough to track down "Children of Heaven," Majidi's unforgettable tale of a brother and sister who share the same pair of beat- up sneakers, have some idea of what's in store for them. Even those viewers, however, won't be prepared for the emotional wallop of the new film.
Although it is about an 8-year-old boy, it is by no means a kid's movie, and the PG rating is well advised for children younger than 10. The emotional complexity of "The Color of Paradise" broadens each step of the way to its unforeseeable conclusion.
