stability running shoes for the flat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Hi all! Mr. So, I think it's time to invest in some new shoes for him.
Almost a year ago, I began running in more minimal shoes. I'm currently training in a racing flat that only has an 8mm drop. My form has improved and I've increased my turnover. Plus, I don't have any joint pain anymore. Win!
So, I'm wondering if the hubs will similarly benefit from a less padded shoe, or if he needs a stability shoe instead. His form is questionable. I'm not sure if he is heel striking, but when we run together he sounds like an elephant. Plus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his feet are as flat as two slices of pizza.
Thoughts?
flat feet here - flat and skinny. previous shoes were asics stability shoes: lots of support and cushioning. i bought them just as i was starting to increase distance from 4-5k to half-marathon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so when my feet kept getting beat to ****,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], i thought that was just what happens. the arch supports resulted in a constant cycle of blister-callous-raw, and my #2 toes were constantly bruised and beat up from slamming into the ends of the shoes.
my new shoes are mizuno minimal shoes (wave rider 14) and they're just like slippers. my feet are back to normal, and last week i got a pedi without shame (after a half-marathon may1).
stability shoes are for pronators, not heel/midfoot/toe issues. that can be corrected by changing your form. What you want to look for is whether or not the ankle is straight up and down when the foot lands. If it is at an angle, then there is pronation. Honestly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your local running shoe store would be able to help you determine if hubs needs stability shoes or stability plus shoes.
I pronate on my left foot only,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I've been happy with my minimalist shoes, stability shoes, and neutral shoes. I'm really just wondering if a flat-footed person could benefit from the approach I'm using. I'm afraid that stability shoes might just reinforce his bad habits!
If it doesn't cause pain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sure - and there's only one way to find out: try it. But he needs to make the transition properly. Keep the runs very short at first - focus more on walking around in them throughout the day.
Personally i would start by running in Converse All-stars or similar low-heeled sneaker. This will provide enough cushioning while getting his body used to the low-heel concept. After a month or 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he can switch to Vibrams or similar shoe. Use pain as a guide - if something hurts, ease up on the running,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or switch back to the Converse for a while.
By the way, people who wear minimal footwear are less likely to develop flat feet.
I'd just get him some new shoes that fit very well, and work on the foot slapping thing separately.
1) Strengthen the anterior tibialis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], (lean back against a wall and lift your toes up, walk around the house on heels, etc.)
2) Lengthen the calve muscles (lots of stretching,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and using a roller).
3) Shorten the stride, and take smaller steps (overstriding contributes to foot slap). If he, or you, listen to music while running, you can pick songs of various speeds and step to them to force yourselves into a quicker cadence. 180 steps per minute is an ultimate goal for average height people, with 150 and below definitely overstriding no matter what your height.
I've worn out several dozens of pairs of running shoes, of many types, and have only had one pair that affected my form at all (for the worse). Winter treadmill work in front of a full length mirror (and some specific exercises to address muscle imbalances) allowed me to make good form improvements that no shoe choice would have ever achieved. You can purposely change how your foot lands and how much it pronates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the change becomes permanent over time.
Thanks so much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everyone!
I think what we're going to do is establish whether he is pronating, get him fitted for an appropriate and comfy pair of running shoes, work on the foot slapping over the summer, and then do some nice easy 5ks this fall. Then, if he wants to try going more minimal, we'll still have plenty of time to experiment and possibly transition (carefully, of course!) before the 10 miler in May of 2012.
i want to add that when i got the stability shoes, i needed stability shoes. just not those ones.
i've gained a lot of strength since then (december 2009). i've had my share of injuries and problems (non-running-related). i had a serious fracture of my right ankle when i was a teenager,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the ligament that attaches the foot to the ankle on the inside was severed, so it's shortened. i've also sprained the left ankle three times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each successive time more severely. i've had arthritis since my late teens. i used to have knee problems too - hyper-extension, because i didn't have the musculature to support the joint.相关的主题文章:
