CBS News Video
I would just like to state how disappointed I am by CBS News, Charlie Rose and Erica Hill for the immature and cruel comments produced by Ms. Hill at around the 2:30 mark about the above clip towards the effect that those struggling with obesity should try to learn that the serving of French fries and ketchup doesn't constitute two servings of vegetables. Such cruel and juvenile cracks don't have any devote a news broadcast. And I was particularly saddened to find Mr. Rose chuckling together with Ms. Hill. I have followed Mr. Rose's career since his late-night days on CBS within the 1980s. Until seeing his behavior within this report, I had always considered him as one of the most intelligent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sophisticated and mature news reporters in the commercial. I believe his stooping to Ms. Hill's level in mocking individuals suffering with this type of severe and life-threatening disability as obesity aptly demonstrates how comments such as Ms. Hill's serve only to coarsen and debase serious analysis of these issues. In my opinion, the CBS morning audience deserves an apology from both Ms. Hill and Mr. Rose. Furthermore, it may be time for the whole morning news organization to examine its editorial policies so as to ensure that similar displays of insensitivity will not recur later on.
I actually do recognize the desire of news anchors to take part in playful banter about the air, particularly in the morning, so as to hold their viewers' attention. The folks on Joe Scarborough's show make an art form from such informality. And that i have no trouble with displays of genuine wit. Through the years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I have seen Mr. Rose engage in conversation with a few of the finest wits in our age--Gore Vidal and also the late Christopher Hitchens, to mention just two. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ms. Hill's comment had little to do with wit. It had been merely bullying and cruel. I would hate to see Mr. Rose spend his final broadcasting years playing together with such childish and ignorant behavior after this kind of illustrious career.
To be sure with the above description of Erica Hill's comments as unprofessional,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I was very disappointment that the anchor on a national news show will make an inexpensive joke at the cost of people experiencing morbid obesity. I'm a physician,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and may only surmise that Ms. Hill's comment reflects deficiencies in informed understanding concerning the complexity from the obesity epidemic our country faces. The current crisis involves complex medical issues, economic pressures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in addition to various societal forces. Ms. Hill's comment came off as shrill and shaming, and was an example of an uninformed attitude with its clear assumptions of why individuals cope with morbid obesity. Her reaction were built with a sense of personal disdain which i can't help but to think revealed some of her own strong feelings about this topic. As a journalist, Ms. Hill should have kept her opinions out of the reporting. Ms. Hill also needs to leave the analysis of the issue to some number of qualified experts which she proved herself to not be today on the show. I've started watching CBS morning news to prevent the tabloid-type presentation of the other two network shows, and that i was very pleased with the changes which were made after Charlie Rose joined the show. Unfortunately, comments for example Ms. Hill's today erode the viewer's rely upon the reporting from the anchor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and modify the viewer's a feeling of the whole show. Hopefully,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ms. Hill with be more thoughtful and sensitive with this issue in the future.
To be sure using the previous comment. I'd like to say which i think the comment that Erica Hill designed to Charlie Rose today was horrific - she made the comment that obese people probably think they are eating 2 vegetable servings a day when they eat french fries with ketchup. It was very cruel, unnecessary, and unprofessional. Unless you have walked in someone's shoes, you do not have the right to judge them. While overeating obviously is one of the contributors to obesity, it is not always the main reason. I have been obese all of my entire life, including after i would be a baby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and fight genetics every day. I lived an extremely unhappy marriage for that 20 years and it has taken until I am in my 40's to finally understand what was making me binge. I are in possession of treatments for my addiction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it's a regular battle. Ms. Hill must be more sensitive rather than being immature and making stupid jokes at other people's expense!!! She must also learn that obesity happens usually due to the addiction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not just because someone chooses to overeat.
recommend when reporting on obese people that agencies make an effort to not make us an out-group that can be judged as less worth respect compared to so-called normal sized population. As a individual who has been doing from diet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to behavior modification to wls and it is still obese, I admit to being responsive to the mindset that oftern lurks behind many of the reports on trading of obesity. I am talking about the sub-text of "YOU would be the problem, should you just exercise some willpower and loose weight then MY world would be better. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps, a dark tone of and method of these pieces would be more responsive to the feelings and experiences of the one-third,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or while you reported soon to be 42%, of their viewing/reading audiences that are non-willingly obese. After all, as we weren't so marginalized we'd be acknowledged as a powerful demographic that crosses all social-economic classes. I, and millions of others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will be watching.
