Classrooms way too cool for school
Parts of the Aboriginal community of Ernabella have regularly been without electricity recently as temperatures drop below zero and extra demand leaves the town's power station struggling to cope.

"This is an absolute bloody outrage," she said. "The classrooms are freezing; children here don't always have shoes, socks or jumpers and we have no lighting and no warmth. Ms Salomon said many families were sleeping outside next to fires to cope with the recent cold snap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which had seen temperatures plummet to as low as -3C.
She said classes were being held outside in the sunlight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and on tarpaulins to protect the children from the frosty ground.
"I am very concerned this will continue throughout winter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Ms Salomon said.
"I am concerned about the morale of the staff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but most importantly I am concerned about the health and wellbeing of our children to be able to come to school and learn."
Uniting Care Wesley indigenous policy head Jonathon Nicholls said the lack of adequate infrastructure was undermining education efforts in remote communities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Schools like Ernabella have worked really hard to improve education to get kids into the practice of coming regularly to school . and this is a problem they shouldn't have to be grappling with," he said.
"Regardless of where you live, children should be able to be safe and have basic human needs met, including warmth in cold weather and the right to an education."
Energy Minister Michael O'Brien said the State Government would take "all necessary steps" to assist with the restoration of electricity supply at Ernabella,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the APY Lands.
