Complexities that mark Karachi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Karachi is ranked the cheapest city in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but living in this 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],362-square-mile concrete mishmash comes at a price - an incessant feeling of insecurity; a constant fear that your last experience can be the excruciating pain of a bullet piercing your vitals.
Like two sides of a coin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the city is an intermixture of lavish lifestyles in upscale neighbourhoods and heart-wrenching poverty in stinky slums with that sinking feeling of dread the lone common factor.
Although some of its areas should have "enter at your own risk" signboards at their limits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no part of the city is really safe, not even the posh ones. That dreaded bullet can strike anywhere.
So why is the city that was once cherished for its late-night eateries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cool sea breeze and romantic beaches now reeking of terror and despair? The problem befalling Karachi is a complex one and it will take more than an article with a word limit to explain why the murder of around seven or eight people almost daily is business as usual in the city.
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is a way to look past the intricacies. Imagine a train loaded with gold attacked by different gangs of bandits like some scene out of an old western film.
That train is Karachi, which has so much to offer to the marauders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in this case land grabbers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], extortionists and even those involved in petty crimes. There is much to gain from the gold train,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and so the bandits are ready to go to any length to cut down the competition. And that is why there are turf wars in the city; different groups constantly struggling for territorial domination. The larger the territory, the more the booty will be for those ruling the roost there. The methods of extortion vary. Some groups have a relatively decent approach - asking for donations or fitra and not taking no for an answer. The trend of extortion in the city is spreading faster than that of bell-bottoms in the late 60s. Even small-time crooks are getting into the act. Refuse to pay the guy illegally charging parking fee, and you might return to find your car's stereo system missing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if not the vehicle itself.
Then there are all the plots and parks that can be taken over by those with enough gun- and manpower. Like the conquerors of the past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], different groups battle it out to claim these lands.
So if there is the gold train and the bandits, where is the sheriff ala John Wayne or Clint Eastwood as in the western? Sadly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is one character that is missing. Law-enforcement agencies are unable to fill those shoes. And if somebody does play the sheriff's role, he is slapped with a transfer order. The city's pot-bellied cops with their handlebar moustaches - probably grown to assure themselves of their manhood - are only good enough for shifting the dead to the hospital.
With the 'political' stars on their side, the criminal groups have become almost 'untouchables'. Not only are the criminals hunting each other down, but are also mowing down innocent people who often just happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
So are there any solutions to this mess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? Perhaps giving an overdose of Viagra to the province's managers might help,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But there is a catch - the old-timers among the lot will probably not survive that.
