Glitch in the finals system
I have no doubt we have a better on-field product than Aussie rules,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I believe we can improve our game by looking at their finals system.
I don't want to be too critical of the NRL because they do a fantastic job on many fronts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I don't agree with the McIntyre system. Obviously no system is perfect,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but my main concern with the McIntyre system is it doesn't fully reward the top four teams.
People may say I'm whingeing because we lost to the Eels last week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there are examples of other top-four teams who have copped a rough deal with our finals format.
My main concern is the home-ground advantage situation. For me, I find it hard to see how Parramatta can effectively get a home final in week two of the play-offs. They finished eighth, but after beating us they played a final in Sydney against the Titans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who did so well during the year to finish third.
They were forced to travel because they lost to the Broncos,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Last year, Melbourne finished minor premiers. But when they lost to the Warriors, they found themselves travelling to Brisbane to play the Broncos. The Storm were good enough to win,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I don't see much reward there for the side that was the best team in the regular season.
What I like about the AFL system is that it better rewards the top four sides. Basically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they fight it out and then the bottom four teams play elimination games.
The other advantage is that in week two,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the two top-four sides who lost in week one get a home final. And unlike the McIntyre system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the third - and fourth-placed teams in the AFL are guaranteed a second chance if they lose their first final.
If we keep the McIntyre system,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], maybe we can look at giving top-four sides a home final in week two, so even if a top-four side lose,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they can still get some advantage over the fifth- to eighth-placed teams.
If there is one team who will benefit from the McIntyre system this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's Melbourne.
They have flown under the radar somewhat, but I felt that six or eight weeks ago they were the team to beat. Some people wrote them off because they'd lost Mick Crocker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jeremy Smith and Israel Folau,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if the structure is strong then a club can overcome those individual losses.
Craig Bellamy has put a brilliant structure there, he knows how to build a club and once they got guys like Billy Slater,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Greg Inglis and Cam Smith back from Origin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Storm were always going to be a big threat.
At the Dragons, we tried this year to mould a bit of our culture on the Storm.
To be where they have been - to be in grand finals for three years and possibly four - is a massive wrap for Craig Bellamy.
The Storm are like the Canterbury Crusaders in rugby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
When I played against the Crusaders,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you knew you had to be at your best for every minute. If you were off your game five per cent, the Crusaders would make you pay - and the Storm are like that. They are so clinical. You just know they will play for 80 minutes. They have great intensity and team unity.
If a game goes to extra time, you know the Storm will want to go the extra yard.
That's why they beat the Broncos in the final minute of that semi-final last year, and I think that's where the Dragons can mature as a club.
We probably lacked a bit of composure against the Eels. As a team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have certainly become better players. Whatever we do this year will make us a stronger club next season.
