SF 49ers gold jackets are prized,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
When Montana connected with Clark in the end zone in the 1982 NFC Championship Game, sending the 49ers to their first Super Bowl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no two children were dressed the same. Only a handful of Candlestick Park fans were wearing replica jerseys. Flannel shirts and a cowboy hat with a 49ers button on the crown was a common uniform for adult men.
But the gold satin 49ers jacket was there en masse - and it's there now. A bright gold beacon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], passed down through generations, uniting 30-plus years of faithful with its gaudy retro coolness.
Sold by Starter and Chalk Line, the jacket was the best 49ers merchandise money could buy in the early 1980s. I was still in elementary school when the 49ers won their first Super Bowl, and never imagined owning one - it would have been madness for my middle-class parents to make such an extravagant purchase that would be outgrown in one or two seasons.
The jackets had a gold reflective surface, red and white elastic at the wrists and neckline, and either an embroidered "49ERS" in an Old West font, or the words "FORTY NINERS" spelled out in white on red felt. Was it overstuffed with down? Packing foam? The ground bones of fallen Cowboys and Bears players? Either way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the skinniest 49ers fan looked like a "Pumping Iron"-era Schwarzenegger from the waist to the neck.
Other old 49ers gear is a memory, long since worn to tatters and used as a car wash or furniture polish rag. But the gold satin jackets were built to last like the engine blocks of American muscle cars. Go to a 49ers game at the Stick in 2013 and you'll still see at least a few in every section.
During this season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we asked readers to send photos and stories about their gold satin jackets for publication on my culture blog the Big Event. There was an attachment by fans that one would associate with heirloom-quality jewelry or furniture.
-- One pair of fans, and , rescued a discarded jacket from the side of Highway 1 near Santa Cruz and stitched it back to health - adding "FAITHFUL" lettering on the back.
-- Victor Schwanke looked like an "All the Right Moves"-era in his photo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], standing in front of Candlestick Park,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in shades and a warm embrace by his girlfriend, Samantha. "My grandpa gave me this jacket," he wrote, "and I guard it with my life."
-- recounts wearing the jacket in North Beach and getting stopped by jacket-admiring 49ers owner . Garcia walked away with two pairs of tickets to last year's NFC Championship Game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
-- Evelyn Sparrow submitted photos of her husband, Marc,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], posing with his jacket in 1989 and 1994. "Of all the possessions that our boys will inherit someday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the only item I've ever heard them argue over is the gold Forty Niners jacket," she wrote. "I guess they will have to toss a coin to see who gets the gold jacket and who ends up with the black satin SF Giants jacket."
I know the feeling. When my wife said her grandmother might still have a jacket that her late husband wore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my scheming pushed the boundaries of good taste. "Was he my size?" I asked my wife, contemplating the least rude way to get a look in her grandmother's closet. (The jacket had been passed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by proper rights of succession, to my wife's uncle.)
Market forces reign in these situations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the team released a new gold satin jacket at their 49ers store late last year that retails for $150. It was the first time the jackets had been available at a major retailer in more than 15 years. A handful of vintage jackets from the '80s are on eBay, most with starting bids of around $200. A reversible version sold this month for $450.
I had mixed emotions. It feels a little bit like letting Giants fans buy replicas of the hard-earned Croix de Candlestick pin, or selling Bay to Breakers shirts to people who didn't run the race.
Or maybe it's just the beginning of new traditions. Old fans give way to young fans. New generations wearing the garish gold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The Circle of Faithful continues ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
