Energetic Seinfeld spurs a lot of laughs
These days, he's developed a knack for asking big ones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well.
Throw in a blazing hailstorm of Biblical proportions, a happy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], damp Friday night crowd at the Jubilee Auditorium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you had the recipe for a lot of laughs at the first of Seinfeld's three Calgary shows Friday night.
While he still has a unique genius for getting all existential about things like how hard it's become to choose a beverage of choice in a world filled with endless possibilities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and what the makers of Five Hour Energy could possibly have been thinking when they chose five hours, there's a little more Russian novelist in the questions Jerry asks as he enters his late fifties (albeit looking a decade younger).
Nowadays, he doesn't shy away from death, whether it's pontificating about the inexplicable popularity of cremation, or speculating on what it would be like to fake your own death,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just to be able to pop up out of your casket and suggest a place to eat afterward.
And just as he's rounded out his material, he's given his delivery a good going over.
In his younger days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Seinfeld's comedy relied largely upon his screwball observational humour. He was funny, but you had to think along with him to arrive at the funny place too.
Now, at 57, he uses his body onstage as much as his mind. Friday night, he burned a lot of that (five hour?) energy acting out everything from wiping the face gunk off someone else's borrowed smartphone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to a nice description of a middleaged man as a helium balloon after all the helium has left the room, leaving it unable to support even the weight of its own string.
Throw in the fact that not only is he hitting middle age, but Seinfeld has transformed from single Jerry on his hit TV series to an old, married dad - he's got three kids between the ages of eight and 12 - and you might not recognize the funnyman onstage as that guy who starred in the No. 1 TV series of the 1990s dressed mainly in jeans, white sneakers and bad, sensible shirts.
"I didn't get married until late,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "Forty-five. I had issues."
I don't know how married life has affected him personally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I like what it's done for his comedy.
Following his routine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Seinfeld came back onstage and took a few questions from the audience.
Naturally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], someone asked the one about whether or not he would ever consider doing another television show.
"I get asked that one quite a bit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "But here's what I tell everyone. I'm old, I'm rich - and I'm tired."
These days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he prefers to sit with the three kids eating cereal and watching Elmo on television.
So naturally someone asks what his favourite cereal is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
While that was always a very Seinfeldian question to ponder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the answer he gave Friday was perfectly representative of Big Picture, Russian Novelist Jerry.
