One of the hardest things to do in co-parenting is to let the other parent be the parent they need to be. It makes sense if you think about it: the couple split up because they couldn't get along,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because they were different. It's realistic that parenting styles will be different, too.
It's a common scenario: Meg comes home from Dad's house on Sunday night with mud on her sneakers. Sneakers that she has to wear the next day to school. Mom has to stay up late to get them washed and dried and when she puts Meg to bed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she makes the comment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "I don't know why your dad lets you get so dirty!" It doesn't sound so bad to Mom, but for Meg,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she is put in the middle. What if Dad and Meg took a hike in the woods together during the day and that's how her shoes got muddy? It's not as if Dad--or Meg--did anything wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but for Mom it means extra duty before she gets to bed that night. But now Meg is going to bed feeling badly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without anyway to take care of it. If she defends Dad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mom will get mad. If she tells Dad not to take her hiking anymore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then he will be disappointed. It's a no-win situation for Meg and she's the one with the fewest options on how to address it.
So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to address it? It's an adult issue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so the adults should address it. If communication is relatively genial, a phone call or an email to Dad letting him know that Meg's sneakers are her school shoes and they shouldn't be worn for hikes would be one way. It is possible that Dad didn't realize his mistake and it would give him an opportunity to address it. If there are issues with communication,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an email is still an option to let Dad know about school shoes versus play shoes. Dad didn't necessarily make the mistake of putting Meg in her school shoes before taking her outside for a hike, and bad shoe planning isn't bad parenting.
If there is no communication possible between the parents,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then Meg will have to be included in this situation. Sending along an extra pair of shoes to Dad's house in Meg's backpack will help to address it. Instead of making a disparaging remark about Dad's parenting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mom could let Meg know that there is an extra pair of shoes that she can wear for going out to play. If Dad still doesn't cooperate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then make sure that Meg has an extra pair of shoes at home to wear to school. Keeping Meg out of the situation is essential--it is not her job to worry about her footwear nor anything else that a parent is supposed to provide. But how each of her parents provide for her care is something that she will have to learn to live with. And the parents have to learn to live with the other's parenting. As long as neither parent is causing harm to the child, then they get to be the parents that they feel is best for their child.
